A muffin flavor comes from a few small details: vanilla, a hint of cinnamon, and lemon zest. Oats add a baked-goods texture. The lemon zest is the part most people leave out, and it is the part that makes the shake taste fresh.
Ingredients
Makes 1 serving.
- 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder (about 30 g)
- 1 cup 2% milk
- ¾ cup frozen blueberries
- ¼ cup rolled oats
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp lemon zest
- 2 ice cubes
Method
- Add the milk and oats to the blender and let them sit for two minutes to soften.
- Add the protein powder, blueberries, vanilla, cinnamon, lemon zest, and ice.
- Blend on high for a full minute, until the oats disappear.
- Pour and grate a little extra lemon zest over the top, if you like.

Tips
- Zest the lemon before cutting it. A fine grater or a microplane works best.
- Frozen blueberries keep the shake cold without much ice and give a deeper purple color.
Swaps and variations
- Use a graham cracker, crushed on top, for a blueberry pie version.
- Replace the oats with a tablespoon of almond butter for a lower-carb version.
