Brownie Batter Protein Shake

Thick enough for a spoon, this chocolate shake gets its raw brownie batter flavor from cocoa, almond butter, and a pinch of salt.

Brownie Batter Protein Shake

Brownie batter flavor comes from three things: deep cocoa, a little fat, and salt. Almond butter supplies the fat, and a pinch of salt does the rest. The shake is thick enough to eat with a spoon.

Ingredients

Makes 1 serving.

  • 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder (about 30 g)
  • ¾ cup 2% milk
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 Medjool date, pitted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 4 ice cubes

Method

  1. Pit the date and add it to the blender with the milk. Blend for 20 seconds so the date breaks down.
  2. Add the protein powder, cocoa, almond butter, vanilla, salt, and ice.
  3. Blend until thick and smooth, about 45 seconds.
  4. Top with a spoonful of whipped cream or a few chocolate cookie crumbs if you like.

Tips

  • Medjool dates blend smoothly. Softer, fresher dates work better than dry ones.
  • This shake gets thicker in the fridge. Stir in a splash of milk before drinking if it sets up.

Swaps and variations

  • Use peanut butter instead of almond butter for a chocolate-peanut version.
  • Replace the date with a tablespoon of maple syrup if you do not have dates.
