Dates add sweetness and a toffee-like depth that pairs well with cocoa. They also thicken the shake. This version uses plant protein and almond milk, so it works for vegan diets.
Ingredients
Makes 1 serving.
- 1 scoop chocolate plant protein powder (pea/rice blend, about 32 g)
- 1 ¼ cups unsweetened almond milk
- 2 Medjool dates, pitted
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 1 pinch salt
- 5 ice cubes
Method
- Remove the pits from the dates. If they feel dry, soak them in warm water for five minutes and drain.
- Blend the dates and almond milk first for 30 seconds, until the dates are mostly broken down.
- Add the protein powder, cocoa, vanilla, salt, and ice.
- Blend until smooth. Pea protein can taste earthy, so taste before you drink and add another half date if needed.

Tips
- Pea and rice protein can have a grainy feel. A longer blend smooths it out noticeably.
- Soaking the dates makes the shake smooth with a standard blender.
Swaps and variations
- Stir in a spoonful of tahini for a halva-style flavor.
- Add a tablespoon of almond butter if you want a richer shake.
