Double Chocolate Protein Shake

Chocolate protein plus unsweetened cocoa gives this shake a deep, bittersweet flavor without a pile of added sugar.

Double Chocolate Protein Shake

Chocolate protein powder on its own can taste flat. A spoonful of unsweetened cocoa adds the bitter edge that reads as real chocolate, and a frozen banana makes the texture thick enough for a straw.

Ingredients

Makes 1 serving.

  • 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder (about 30 g)
  • 1 cup 2% milk
  • 1 medium frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 4 ice cubes

Method

  1. Pour the milk into the blender, then add the protein powder and cocoa so the powders get wet before the blades start.
  2. Add the frozen banana, vanilla, salt, and ice.
  3. Blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds, until no banana chunks are left.
  4. Pour and drink right away. It thickens as it sits.

Tips

  • The pinch of salt sharpens the chocolate flavor and will not make the shake taste salty.
  • Peel ripe bananas, break them into thirds, and freeze them flat in a bag so they blend easily.

Swaps and variations

  • Use almond milk for a lighter shake or whole milk for a richer one.
  • Replace the banana with half a cup of frozen cherries for a chocolate-cherry version.
